Bullenbeisser Temperament and Lifespan

Ancient breed Bullenbeisser belongs to the type of Molossians. The breed was widespread in Western and Central Europe where it was very popular. Fearless huge dogs, insensitive to pain, with powerful jaws, remarkable strength and surprising agility, were indispensable helpers. They were used for hunting and as herds.

The dog had a strong and even more evil character, it was very sensitive to strangers, but devoted to the masters faithfully. It also guarded its own space. The lifespan of the dog was about 10-11 years depending on the living conditions.

How Much Does a Bullenbeisser Cost and Price Range

The last specimen of this breed had died between the XVII and XVIII centuries. That's why it is impossible to have this dog as your pet, in any case it is not the best choice for the family with kids. Instead of this breed you can buy a Boxer.

Bullenbeisser Breed Characteristics, Information and Facts

The first mention of this dog dates back to 370 AD. e., when the Assyrians began to migrate from Asia Minor to Europe. They brought large fighting dogs Alaunt with them, which, in all probability, were descended from huge dogs from the Caucasus and the Eurasian Steppe. Alaunt is very similar to Central Asian Shepherd.

After the conquest of the Iberian Peninsula at the end of the V century dogs spread across Europe. Basically, they were used as shepherd, hunters and guardian dogs.

It was in Central Europe, ancient Alaunt changed very much. The head and jaws became more monolithic and flat, wool significantly shortened. Already around 800 AD. e. there were various options for the breed in England, Spain, Italy and Germany. The pure Bullenbeisser phenotype was completely lost to the XX century, when representatives of this breed were actively interbred with other breeds. In the late 1870s the German breeders used Bullenbeisser dogs for the new breed - Boxer: Alaunt offspring was interbred with English bulldogs. And by the beginning of World War II, there wasn't any Bullenbeisser.

Descendants of Bullenbeisser dogs are considered to be boxers.
